About this place

Gunja Catholic Church is a parish of the Siheung District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving the sacramental and liturgical life of Catholics in the Gunja area of Siheung. Its patron is St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Korea's first Catholic priest. The parish remembers his priestly dedication and martyrdom while continuing its own life of worship and evangelization. Its inclusion among the diocesan pilgrimage churches designated for the bicentenary jubilee of St. Andrew Kim's birth reflects this connection with its patron.

Gunja Parish also became one of the established communities from which other parishes in the Siheung area later developed. Today it functions as a local parish where Catholics share the faith through the liturgy, catechesis, small communities, and service. Rather than being an old shrine in itself, its significance lies in being an ordinary parish dedicated to a Korean martyr saint, keeping the spirit of the martyrs present in daily Catholic life and handing it on to later generations.

History & origins

Gunja Parish was established in the Diocese of Suwon on February 3, 1994. It became an independent parish as the Catholic community expanded amid the urban development of the Siheung area, and St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon was chosen as its patron. After its establishment, Gunja organized its own parish life while also becoming part of the process through which other Catholic communities in the surrounding area developed.

One notable change was the formation of a separate parish in the Sihwa area. According to diocesan records, Sihwa St. Paul Parish was separated from Gunja Parish on February 14, 1997. This shows that only a few years after Gunja's establishment, continued population and Catholic growth in the Siheung area required the pastoral territory to be divided and a new parish community to be formed.

The parish has continued to shape its identity around St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon. During the 2021 jubilee marking the bicentenary of his birth, Gunja was included among the pilgrimage churches designated by the Diocese of Suwon, linking ordinary parish life once again with devotion to the Korean martyr priest. The history of Gunja thus reflects both the establishment and growth of a local Catholic community and the wider pastoral development through which new parishes emerged from it.
