About this place
Gungri Catholic Church is a parish of the Songtan District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in and around Gung-ri, Godeok-myeon, Pyeongtaek. Its patrons are the Korean Martyr Saints, and the parish carries a long local memory of faith into present-day liturgical and community life. Compared with a large urban parish, Gungri retains a distinctly local character in which Catholics from neighboring villages share parish life in a relatively close-knit community.
The significance of Gungri reaches much farther back than the date on which it was formally established as a parish, because it is rooted in an older mission-station tradition. Today the church serves the community through regular Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and devotional life while also preserving the memory of earlier generations who maintained the faith through the mission station. Visitors can see here how the ordinary pastoral life of a modern parish continues a much older Catholic tradition shaped in a rural village setting.
History & origins
The Catholic faith in Gungri began in a mission station that predates the present parish. A diocesan account published for the parish's 25th anniversary traces the community's roots back roughly a century to that mission-station period. After generations of village Catholics had maintained the faith, population growth and changing pastoral needs led to the establishment of Gungri as an independent parish on January 30, 1998.
After the parish was erected, the community worked to provide the church and pastoral facilities needed for an independent parish. The diocesan 25th-anniversary account preserves memories of parishioners even harvesting and processing mugwort to raise construction funds, and describes the building and dedication of the church during the 2000s. The process shows how an older mission-station tradition was transformed into a modern parish structure through the work and participation of the local community itself.
In 2023 Gungri Parish marked its 25th anniversary with a commemorative Mass and offered both a large communal Rosary intention and a parish history recording the previous twenty-five years. The anniversary was therefore not simply a celebration of a date, but an effort to preserve the faith handed down since the mission-station period and pass it to the next generation. Gungri's history is that of a small local Catholic community that kept deep roots of faith while growing into an independent parish.
