About this place
Gonjiam Parish belongs to the Gwangju District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and serves the liturgical and faith life of Catholics in and around Gonjiam-eup, Gwangju. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory lists Gonjiam as a full parish, with St. John Yi Mun-u as its patron saint.
Through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and devotional life, the parish connects local Catholics with the wider life of the universal Church and the Diocese of Suwon. The key to understanding this place is that it is the regular parish community for Catholics living in the Gonjiam area, where faith is practiced and handed on across generations. Its dedication to St. John Yi Mun-u also places the witness of a Korean martyr-saint before the community as a spiritual model.
History & origins
Gonjiam Parish was established as a new parish of the Diocese of Suwon on January 25, 2000. In its account of the parish’s twenty-fifth anniversary in 2025, the diocese described Gonjiam as a community born at the beginning of the Great Jubilee of 2000. From its establishment, the parish took St. John Yi Mun-u as patron, incorporating the heritage of Korean martyr faith into its identity.
After its founding, the parish developed as an independent pastoral community for the Gonjiam area in eastern Gwangju. Diocesan records and the directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea agree on the founding date and patron, providing a consistent basic chronology for the parish.
In September 2025, Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon presided at a Mass marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the parish. Former leaders, clergy, and parishioners gathered for the celebration, during which Confirmation was also administered. The anniversary marked the community’s passage from a newly established parish to a local church with the accumulated experience of a full generation of Catholic life.
