About this place

Gongdo Parish belongs to the Anseong District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and is the community in which Catholics of Gongdo-eup and nearby areas continue their life of faith around the Mass and the sacraments. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory identifies Gongdo as a full parish and records its patron as St. Andrew Kim Taegon, patron of the Korean clergy.

The parish is the basic pastoral community that brings together Sunday and weekday liturgy, sacramental life, catechesis, and communal activities for local Catholics. Its patronage under Korea’s first priest and martyr gives it a clear spiritual connection to the priesthood and the martyr tradition of the Korean Church. Gongdo should therefore be understood not simply as a church building, but as the center of the Catholic parish community serving the Gongdo area.

History & origins

Gongdo Parish was established on January 25, 2000 as a new parish serving the Anseong area of the Diocese of Suwon. The directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea and the diocese’s twenty-fifth-anniversary record give the same founding date, and the parish began under the patronage of St. Andrew Kim Taegon.

After its establishment, Gongdo developed as an independent pastoral community for the Gongdo-eup area, sustaining the liturgical and sacramental life of local Catholics. The diocesan account of the parish’s twenty-fifth anniversary in 2025 shows how the work of successive priests and parishioners had accumulated over a full generation.

On July 6, 2025, Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon presided at the Mass marking the parish’s twenty-fifth anniversary. Held near the feast of the parish patron, St. Andrew Kim Taegon, the celebration gathered former pastors and parishioners to look back on the years since the parish was founded. The anniversary became an important milestone confirming how the community had taken root in the area after beginning as a newly established parish.
