About this place

Gochogol Retreat House is a retreat and prayer facility of the Diocese of Suwon, operating within the same sacred setting as the historic Gochogol mission-station chapel in Wonsam-myeon, Yongin. Its most distinctive feature is the coexistence of modern retreat facilities with one of the oldest surviving traditional Korean-style mission chapels in the diocese. The old chapel continues to be used as a place of prayer and faith formation.

The traditional chapel is registered as a National Registered Cultural Heritage property, bringing together religious significance and architectural and cultural value. Its structure preserves traces of how a Korean traditional house was adapted to Catholic liturgy and communal life, while the quiet rural surroundings invite reflection on the lives of earlier Catholics and the local establishment of the Church.

The retreat house allows visitors to encounter this heritage not merely as an old building to be viewed, but through prayer, formation, and retreat. Gochogol is therefore both a diocesan retreat facility and a place where the memory of a persecuted Catholic village and the heritage of a historic Korean mission chapel continue within living Catholic practice.

History & origins

The Catholic history of Gochogol begins long before the retreat house, with a village of believers formed during the period of persecution. Church historical sources state that around 1820 Catholics fleeing persecution gathered in this mountain area and formed a community. During the Byeongin Persecution of 1866, the village suffered severe damage and several believers were arrested and martyred, with their names preserved in persecution records. As greater religious freedom later became possible, Catholics returned and rebuilt the community.

The surviving traditional Korean mission chapel was built in 1891. An inscription on the building records that its pillars and roof frame were raised on March 16 of that year. The chapel then served local Catholics for many decades as a place of prayer and Mass. National heritage documentation notes later expansion in the 1910s and subsequent structural changes, while emphasizing that the building still preserves valuable evidence of how a traditional Korean house was adapted for Catholic communal and liturgical use.

Efforts also developed to carry the memory of the Catholic village and chapel into retreat and formation ministry. Retreat facilities were established at Gochogol for prayer and education, and on March 9, 2018, the old chapel was registered as National Registered Cultural Heritage, formally recognizing its historical and architectural value. The following year, new education and administration buildings were constructed for the retreat house and blessed in September 2019.

Conservation work continued to recover the earlier appearance of the historic chapel. National heritage records document repairs to the foundation and later dismantling-and-repair work, while the diocese and the city of Yongin pursued restoration of elements such as the thatched roof and original entrance arrangement. Gochogol has thus been preserved as a layered Catholic site in which the memory of a persecuted village, a nineteenth-century Korean mission chapel, and a modern retreat house coexist in one place.
