About this place

Gisan Catholic Church is a parish of the Osan District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in Gisan-dong, Hwaseong, and the surrounding area through Mass and the sacraments. Its patron is St. Peter Yu Tae-chol, the young Korean martyr. Remembering his steadfast faith, the parish supports families, young people, and other generations as they continue the faith through the liturgy, catechesis, and community life.

Gisan is a relatively recent parish, separated in response to urban growth and increasing Catholic numbers in the Hwaseong and Byeongjeom area. Since becoming independent, it has developed its own liturgical and pastoral organization within the local residential area while retaining its historical connection with its mother parish. Its significance lies less in an ancient cultural monument than in the modern pastoral task of creating a new and accessible center of Catholic life in a rapidly changing urban environment.

History & origins

Gisan Parish was created as a daughter parish when the Catholic community in the Byeongjeom area of Hwaseong grew large enough for the territory of Byeongjeom Parish to be divided. According to diocesan records, Gisan was established on September 26, 2006, with St. Peter Yu Tae-chol as its patron. It began as an independent pastoral unit during a period when the Diocese of Suwon was erecting several new parishes and adjusting its local pastoral structure.

After becoming independent, Gisan developed its own celebration of Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, and parish organizations. Detailed official documentation of its early church construction is limited, but a diocesan report on the 25th anniversary of Byeongjeom Parish in 2010 records Catholics from Byeongjeom, Annyeong, and Gisan gathering together. The same report explicitly identifies Gisan as a daughter parish separated from Byeongjeom in 2006.

That gathering shows that the newer parishes retained a bond of faith with their mother parish even after becoming independent communities. Gisan's history is therefore less the story of an old mission station or shrine than a modern diocesan example of how urban growth and increasing Catholic numbers in the Hwaseong area led to the division of an existing parish and the creation of a new community with its own pastoral foundation.
