About this place

Gian Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Suwon serving the sacramental and liturgical life of Catholics in Gian-dong, Hwaseong, and the surrounding area. Diocesan and religious-order records also use the name “Gian St. Paul Catholic Church,” showing the community's longstanding dedication to St. Paul the Apostle. The Sisters Apostles of the Descent of the Holy Spirit have also been assigned to the parish and participate in its apostolate.

Gian Parish grew into an independent parish from an older mission-station tradition. Today it connects local Catholics through the liturgy, catechesis, family and small-community life, and missionary activity, while plans for a new church building are also being developed. The parish can therefore be understood as a community that preserves the memory of an earlier mission station while continually reorganizing both its pastoral life and physical space in response to the changing residential environment of Hwaseong.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Gian existed as a mission station before the parish was formally established. A parish testimony presented by the Diocese of Suwon in 2026 remembers that a mission station was already present in Gian in 1982, confirming that local Catholics were gathering around a mission community at least by the early 1980s. On this foundation, Gian Parish was established as an independent parish of the Diocese of Suwon on February 14, 1997.

As the parish became established, its pastoral foundation gradually broadened. The official chronology of the Sisters Apostles of the Descent of the Holy Spirit records their assignment on January 27, 2011, to “Gian St. Paul Catholic Church, Diocese of Suwon.” This marks the beginning of the sisters' participation in parish apostolate and shows how a community that had grown from a mission station developed a pastoral structure involving clergy, laity, and religious women.

More recently, a new stage has begun in the development of the parish's physical space. In March 2026 the Diocese of Suwon officially announced the result of the architectural selection process for a new Gian church building, confirming that planning for the new church is under way. Gian's history therefore connects the memory of a small mission station with the establishment of an independent parish, the participation of a religious community in its apostolate, and the present effort to prepare a new church for the future.
