About this place

Geumjeong Catholic Church is a parish of the Gunpo-Uiwang District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving the sacramental and liturgical life of Catholics in the Geumjeong area of Gunpo. Its patron is St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, and the parish reflects on her spirituality of small acts of love and fidelity in ordinary life. The Sisters of St. Andrew participate in parish apostolate, while catechesis, devotional life, small communities, and service support the faith of local Catholics.

Geumjeong is a modern urban parish formed as Catholic numbers grew in the Gunpo and Sanbon areas and a new community was separated from existing parishes. Its significance therefore lies less in an ancient monument than in the way Catholics formerly belonging to different parishes came together within a new residential area and built a parish of their own. Today the church serves as a local center where parishioners celebrate the liturgy, build fellowship, and pass the faith to the next generation.

History & origins

Geumjeong Parish was established as the Catholic population increased and residential areas in Gunpo and Sanbon became more distinct. On January 26, 1999, the new community began with 492 households from Gunpo Parish and 503 from Sanbon Parish, a total of 995 households and 2,624 Catholics. A defining feature of its early history is therefore that believers from two different mother parishes came together to form a single parish around a new local area.

The new parish took St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus as its patron and gradually organized its own liturgical and pastoral life. Over the next quarter-century it became an established parish of the Gunpo-Uiwang District, growing from a community formed by separation into a stable local church.

In 2024 the parish celebrated its 25th anniversary with a commemorative Mass. During the preparation period, the community looked back on its history through shared Rosary intentions, Bible reading, and the compilation of anniversary records. The experience of Catholics from two mother parishes becoming one community at the beginning was echoed in these common prayers and acts of remembrance. Geumjeong's history thus shows how a new parish can be formed in response to changing urban life and then build a shared memory over a generation.
