History & origins

The background of the Catholic Education and Culture Center lies in the Diocese of Suwon’s gradual expansion of systematic formation for lay people, families, and human development. Diocesan historical material points to the Seongsim Human Development Institute as an important predecessor, explaining that it began at Dandae-dong Parish in 1982 and continued educational work linking human growth and faith. Together with the research and formation work of the Family Pastoral Research Institute, this created a growing need for a more comprehensive center for education and retreats.

Within this development, the Seongsim Human Development Institute and the Family Pastoral Research Institute jointly founded the Catholic Education and Culture Center. The center formally began operations after an opening ceremony in Uiwang on October 30, 2003, presided over by Bishop Choi Deok-gi of Suwon. Its stated orientation was “true life, true humanity, and true family,” expressing an intention to connect faith formation not only with personal spirituality but also with life, family, and social relationships.

After opening, the center became a meeting place for diverse lay apostolates and educational activities of the diocese. Historical introductions to the center record Catholic groups and formation activities in such fields as early-childhood education, senior universities, liturgical flower arrangement, and tea culture as having been organized or developed there. This shows how the center expanded beyond a facility for any single program and became an educational base linking Catholics of different ages and ministries.

The history of the center can therefore be read as part of the Diocese of Suwon’s effort to bring lay formation, family ministry, and spiritual education together in one place. Its present combination of educational, retreat, and lodging functions continues the purpose established through that history.
