About this place

Ganam Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Suwon serving Catholics in Ganam-eup and the surrounding area of Yeoju. Its patron saint is St. Paul Chong Hasang. Centered on the celebration of Mass and the sacraments, the parish supports everyday Catholic life through catechesis, preparation for baptism, liturgy, and small-community activities.

Ganam lies in the living area between Yeoju and Icheon, where the town center and rural communities meet. The church is not only a regular gathering place for local Catholics but is also included in a walking-pilgrimage route presented by the Diocese of Suwon, making it a place of prayer for pilgrims linking churches and holy sites in the Yeoju area.

The parish is therefore best understood not simply as a local church building, but as a community that inherited the faith of an earlier mission-station community and grew into a parish, while continuing today to connect the liturgical, educational, and communal life of Catholics in the area.

History & origins

Catholic life in the Ganam area began before the establishment of the parish, centered on the Taepyeong-ri mission station under Icheon Parish. Sources from the Diocese of Suwon describe this mission station as the predecessor of Ganam Parish, showing that it provided a stable base for Catholic life in southeastern Yeoju and the neighboring Icheon area.

As the mission-station community grew, Ganam Parish was established on February 18, 1993. Its first pastor was Fr. Mauricius, known in Korean as Fr. Go Ma-un, a New Zealand member of the Missionary Society of St. Columban. The appointment of a foreign missionary as the first pastor reflects the cooperation between the diocese and missionary institutes in developing pastoral care in rural areas at the time.

The establishment of Ganam Parish formed part of the gradual division of the broad pastoral territory once served from Icheon as local Catholic communities increased. Ganam subsequently assumed responsibility for the liturgical and sacramental life of Catholics in its own area and developed a full parish structure on the foundation laid during the mission-station period.

The fact that Ganam is now presented as a point on a diocesan pilgrimage route also rests on this accumulated local history of faith. The present parish did not appear suddenly as a new facility; it grew out of a long-standing mission-station community, and that transition offers a window into the growth of the Catholic Church along the Yeoju-Icheon border area.
