About this place

Eunhaeng-dong Catholic Church is the church used by Eunhaeng-dong Parish in the Seongnam District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Diocesan sources also refer to the community as Eunhaeng-dong Holy Family Parish, whose patron is Saint Joseph, Guardian of the Holy Family. The present church was built by a community that had continued its Catholic life for many years in a cramped basement of a commercial building. It now serves as the parish's central place for the celebration of Mass and the sacraments and for sharing faith through the Word of God and prayer. The building also brings together spaces for liturgy, pastoral ministry, formation, and fellowship, allowing the community’s ordinary life of faith to continue in one place. The official “Holy Family” parish name and its devotion to Saint Joseph are also important clues for understanding the community’s spiritual identity.

Scripture is a prominent feature of the present church. Biblical passages are inscribed on the “Door of the Word” leading into the worship space and on the main entrance, so that the building itself invites people to remember and meditate on the Word. Because the church was formally dedicated in conjunction with the parish's twenty-fifth anniversary, it can be understood as the fruit of a community that finally found a permanent home after a long period in temporary facilities, as well as a focal point of Catholic life in the Eunhaeng-dong area of Seongnam. By inscribing Scripture into the architecture, the church presents itself not merely as a meeting hall but as a place where daily liturgy and meditation on the Bible are visibly joined.

History & origins

Eunhaeng-dong Parish was established on January 30, 1998, after being separated from Dandae-dong Parish. In its early years it had no independent church building and continued to celebrate Mass and conduct parish activities for a long period in the basement of a commercial building. Diocesan records describe this as nineteen years of life in a temporary church. Even without an independent church building, the parish maintained its organization and liturgical life, and the long use of temporary facilities made the construction of a permanent church a shared goal of the whole community.

The construction of a permanent church entered a concrete phase when the groundbreaking Mass was celebrated at the present site on December 9, 2017. The community supported the project through the Rosary and offerings, and after difficulties during construction, it celebrated the entrance Mass for the new church on August 17, 2019, about twenty months later. More than two decades after its establishment, the parish finally had a stable space for the liturgy. The project encountered difficulties, including problems involving the contractor, but parishioners continued their prayers and fundraising until the community could move in. The new building combined the worship space with a hall and rooms for formation and pastoral ministry, providing a much broader foundation for parish life than the former temporary church.

Preparation for the formal dedication continued after the community moved into the new church. On August 15, 2023, marking the parish's twenty-fifth anniversary, Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon presided over the church dedication Mass. The path from a temporary basement space to the construction and dedication of a permanent church records how the Eunhaeng-dong community built its parish home through prayer and shared participation. Preparation for the dedication also included Eucharistic adoration, Scripture reading, the Rosary, and the copying of Scripture, linking the completion of the building with a process of spiritual renewal within the parish.
