About this place

어농성지 is a martyr shrine administered by the Diocese of Suwon, dedicated especially to early Korean Catholics who risked their lives to open the way for ordained ministry in the Korean Church. It honors figures such as Paul Yun Yu-il, Sabas Ji Hwang, and Matthias Choe In-gil, who served as secret envoys, as well as Father James Zhou Wen-mo and other martyrs connected with the persecutions around the turn of the nineteenth century. The diocese also emphasizes the shrine as a place where young people can learn the faith of the martyrs and renew their own commitment.

The shrine includes prayer areas honoring the martyrs, Stations of the Cross, a church, and pilgrimage paths. These spaces help visitors reflect on the dangerous circumstances of the early Korean Church and the choices made by its believers. Rather than remembering only individual martyrs, the shrine also highlights a community in which people shared different roles and accepted risk for the sake of the Gospel. In this way, Eonong connects the history of martyrdom with the responsibilities and courage of Christian life today.

History & origins

At the heart of the history commemorated at Eonong are the secret envoys sent by the Korean Catholic community in its effort to obtain a priest. Paul Yun Yu-il traveled to Beijing to explain the condition of the Korean Church and ask for clergy, and Sabas Ji Hwang and Matthias Choe In-gil shared in this mission. Their work contributed to the entry of the Chinese priest Father James Zhou Wen-mo into Korea in 1794 and the beginning of his ministry.

When the presence of the priest was discovered, persecution followed. In 1795, Yun Yu-il, Ji Hwang, and Choe In-gil were arrested and martyred without revealing the priest’s whereabouts. During the Shinyu Persecution of 1801, Father Zhou and other Catholics also gave their lives. Eonong consequently became a place of remembrance for the sacrifices made by the early Church to preserve the priesthood, the sacraments, and the life of the Christian community.

In modern times, the shrine was developed to honor these witnesses. In 2012 a Mass of thanksgiving marked twenty-five years since its proclamation as a shrine, providing an occasion to look back on the work of cultivating the site and transmitting the spirituality of the martyrs. Tomb and memorial areas, Stations of the Cross, and other prayer spaces were organized so that pilgrims could encounter both history and faith.

The Diocese of Suwon has given particular attention to Eonong as a place where children, youth, and young adults can encounter the spirituality of the martyrs. The modern development of the shrine is therefore best understood not simply as an expansion of facilities but as a pastoral effort to connect the courageous choices of early Catholics with the formation of new generations.
