About this place
Dongtan Supsok Parish belongs to the Osan District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and honors Saint Francis of Assisi as its patron. It is the local parish where Catholics around Dongtansupsok-ro in Hwaseong gather around the Mass and the sacraments, and the current parish and patron are confirmed in the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea.
Saint Francis of Assisi is widely known for poverty, peace, and a fraternal love for creation. The parish keeps this Franciscan witness as the spiritual meaning of its patron and helps Catholics live the Gospel in everyday life through liturgy, prayer, and faith formation.
History & origins
Dongtan Supsok Parish was established on August 28, 2007. With Saint Francis of Assisi as patron, it began as an independent parish of the Osan District of the Diocese of Suwon, providing a new Catholic community for local believers during the period when Dongtan New Town was taking shape.
The Catholic directory and diocesan sources clearly confirm the foundation date, present location, and patron, but they do not publicly provide a sufficiently detailed chronology of the early temporary church or construction of the church building. For that reason, unverified groundbreaking or dedication dates are not added, and the establishment of the parish in 2007 is treated as the secure historical starting point.
The parish has continued to maintain its identity under the patronage of Saint Francis of Assisi.
