About this place
Dongtan Songdong Parish belongs to the Osan District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and honors Our Lady, Queen of Peace, as its patron. Its territory includes all of Banggyo-dong and Song-dong and parts of Sancheok-dong and Jangji-dong, serving the liturgical and sacramental life of the Catholic community that formed in the southern part of Dongtan 2 New Town.
With Mary, Queen of Peace, as patron, prayer for peace and reconciliation and Marian devotion are important spiritual signs for the parish. Diocesan records also show that parishioners' Rosary prayer and varied forms of participation played a major role in preparing a permanent church within a relatively short time, a characteristic feature of this community's development.
History & origins
Dongtan Songdong Parish was established as a new parish of the Diocese of Suwon on June 16, 2020. It began with 471 households and 1,326 Catholics and was assigned all of Banggyo-dong and Song-dong together with parts of Sancheok-dong and Jangji-dong. Because it did not yet have an independent church, the new parish initially kept its office at Namdongtan Parish while organizing its community.
The parish was founded during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to diocesan records, it combined in-person activity with non-face-to-face efforts such as the “Songdong Market,” an online group-purchase project, and online prayer. Parishioners also set a goal of offering one million decades of the Rosary for the construction of the church, eventually exceeding 1.5 million decades.
About two and a half years after the parish was founded, the entrance Mass was celebrated in the new church on February 11, 2023. By then the Catholic population had grown to about 2,200, and the building was designed so that local residents could also approach it naturally. The process is a notable example of a new-town parish building an independent church and community base through a difficult period.
