About this place

Dongtan Bansong-dong Parish belongs to the Osan District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and honors Saint Pio of Pietrelcina as its patron. It is the parish where Catholics in and around Bansong-dong, Hwaseong, celebrate the Mass and the sacraments and continue their faith formation and community life; the present church stands on Geumban 2-gil.

The spirituality associated with Saint Pio—prayer, the sacrament of reconciliation, and devotion to the Passion of Christ—gives the parish its patronal meaning. Because the present church was dedicated only after a long building process sustained by the prayers and participation of parishioners, the character of this place is also closely tied to the community's perseverance and shared faith.

History & origins

Dongtan Bansong-dong Parish was established on September 2, 2008, initially under the name “Dongtan Resurrection Parish.” A groundbreaking ceremony for the church was held on March 27, 2010, but concerns about the design and practical use led to a complete redesign, and full construction began around the beginning of 2011.

After construction progressed, Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon presided over the entrance Mass on April 14, 2012. The community then continued parish life in the new building, while the formal dedication of the church, in the diocesan sense, came only after further financial and communal preparation. In 2019 the diocesan presbyteral council confirmed the change of the parish name from “Dongtan Resurrection” to “Dongtan Bansong-dong.”

In preparation for the dedication, parishioners continued spiritual and material efforts from 2023 into 2024, including the offering of one million decades of the Rosary and financial pledges for the church. Finally, on September 29, 2024, Bishop Lee Yong-hoon presided over the dedication, bringing the long church-building process that began with the parish's foundation in 2008 to an important fulfillment.
