About this place
Dongsuwon Parish belongs to the Yeongtong District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and honors Saint Peter Choe Hyeong as its patron. Its territory includes Yeonmu-dong, Uman-dong, and part of Iui-dong in Suwon, and since separating from Buksuwon Parish it has served as the local parish community for Mass, the sacraments, and faith formation in the eastern part of Suwon.
A distinctive feature of the parish is that it maintained an independent Catholic community for many years while worshipping in a temporary church. Its present church site is on Changnyong-daero, where a diocesan building project has been undertaken to provide more stable spaces for worship, education, and parish life.
History & origins
Dongsuwon Parish was established on January 25, 2000, after being separated from Buksuwon Parish. For roughly the next twenty-five years the community celebrated Mass in a temporary church building near the entrance to Iui-dong, Suwon. Its patron is Saint Peter Choe Hyeong, one of the Korean martyrs.
As the population of Gwanggyo New Town grew and the number of parishioners increased, the parish began to pursue a new church building in earnest from 2011. The community raised funds and strengthened parish unity through bazaars, sales of donated goods, budget savings by parish groups, concerts, and athletic gatherings. A contractor selection process for the construction was also carried out in 2023.
On April 20, 2024, Auxiliary Bishop Lino Lee Seong-hyo, then vicar general, presided over the Mass and groundbreaking ceremony at the new site on Changnyong-daero 267. The plan included two buildings for the church and an education center, marking an important transition after many years in a temporary worship space.
