About this place

Dongpangyo Parish belongs to the Bundang District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and honors Saint Francis of Assisi as its patron. It is the parish where Catholics in the Pangyo area of Bundang-gu, Seongnam, gather around the Mass and the sacraments, and the current parish and patron are confirmed in the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea.

The Franciscan spirituality of poverty, peace, and fraternity is an important sign for the parish. In 2026, for the special jubilee marking the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis, the parish prepared an indulgenced pilgrimage course within the church so that visitors could reflect on his life and spirituality. This is a concrete example of how the parish continues to bring the meaning of its patron into present pastoral life.

History & origins

Dongpangyo Parish was established on September 1, 2009. Formed during the development of the Pangyo area, the new Catholic community took Saint Francis of Assisi as its patron and began to take root as an independent parish of the Bundang District of the Diocese of Suwon.

The diocesan chronology records a later process of standardizing parish names and patron saints in which Dongpangyo was formally linked to the name of Saint Francis. After a long period of preparing a permanent church, the diocesan chronology records the dedication of Dongpangyo Church on October 9, 2021, marking the offering of its own church building within the diocese.

In 2026 the parish operated a plenary-indulgence pilgrimage course for the special jubilee marking the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. From parish foundation to church dedication and then to a pilgrimage program centered on its patron, this history shows how Franciscan spirituality has continued to shape the community's identity beyond the completion of the building itself.
