About this place
Dochondong Parish belongs to the Bundang District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has Saint Peter the Apostle as its patron. It is the local Catholic parish where the faithful of the Dochon-dong area of Jungwon-gu, Seongnam, gather around the Mass and the sacraments, and it is listed as an independent parish in the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea.
Saint Peter, its patron, represents the confession of faith in Christ and the responsibility entrusted to an apostle. Dochondong Parish takes this patronal meaning as a sign for the community and serves as a place where liturgy, faith formation, and fellowship meet. Its present character is that of a neighborhood parish helping Catholics connect daily life with the life of faith.
History & origins
Dochondong Parish was established on September 2, 2008. In its early period it had no church building of its own, so the community rented one floor of a commercial building as a temporary church and gradually took shape with assistance from its mother parish, Yatap-dong St. Mark Parish.
Early in 2009 the diocese held a design competition for a new church, and on May 29 of that year Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. The plan called for a two-story complex with the main worship space, catechetical rooms, a multipurpose room, a rectory, and parish offices. Because the community was still small, neighboring parishes were also asked to support the project with prayer, attention, and assistance.
The diocesan chronology records the dedication of Dochondong St. Peter Church on May 28, 2017. The path from a rented temporary church to the dedication of its own church building shows how the parish gradually became established as an independent Catholic community in the area.
