About this place
Deonjisil Catholic Church is a parish of the Anseong District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It serves Catholics in Geumgwang-myeon and neighboring rural areas of Anseong, gathering them around the Mass and the sacraments. Its patron is the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Queen of Peace, and its roots in older Catholic villages and mission stations are an important background for understanding the parish today.
The parish connects Catholics scattered across a broad rural area and sustains liturgy, sacramental life, catechesis, and community activities. Unlike a compact urban parish, one of its distinctive roles is to bring together believers living in several villages and to carry a long local Catholic tradition into the present parish community.
The name “Deonjisil” itself comes from an older local place name. The parish is therefore both a community formally created in the late twentieth century and a church whose roots reach much further back into the history of rural mission stations and Catholic settlements. This combination gives Deonjisil Parish a distinctive place in the Catholic life of the Anseong area.
History & origins
The roots of Deonjisil Parish reach far earlier than the formal creation of the parish. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea identifies its origin in the Seonbawi mission station in Osan-ri, Geumgwang-myeon. The community was first under Gongseri Parish, established in 1895, and after Gupo-dong Parish was created in 1900 it continued as the Deonjisil mission station. By the 1920s, records indicate that a Catholic community of roughly one hundred people already existed there.
After many decades as a mission community, Deonjisil was elevated to parish status on February 13, 1992. Church sources also describe it as a parish separated from Anseong Parish; this refers to the same historical line because Gupo-dong Parish later recovered the name Anseong Parish. The new parish was placed under the patronage of Mary, Queen of Peace.
After becoming an independent parish, the community began building a church suited to its new status. The Catholic Times records that a groundbreaking ceremony was held on August 30, 1992, presided over by Bishop Angelo Kim Nam-su. Plans called for catechetical rooms and a small chapel in the basement, a presbytery and office space, and a main church above.
In 2022 the parish celebrated the 30th anniversary of its establishment with a Mass of thanksgiving. In preparation, it renovated the small chapel and repaired the basement dining hall, catechetical rooms, and stained glass. The history of Deonjisil is thus the story of an old rural mission community growing into a parish and continuing to renew its sacred space for later generations.
