About this place

Dangsudong Catholic Church is a parish of the Gwonseon District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It is the local community in which Catholics of Dangsudong and nearby parts of Gwonseon-gu gather around the Mass and the sacraments. Its patron is Saint Magdalena Heo Gye-im, a Korean martyr, giving the parish a spiritual connection to the Korean Church’s tradition of faithfulness under persecution.

The parish supports the sacramental life of local Catholics through Baptism, Matrimony, funerals, catechesis, prayer, fellowship, and service to neighbors. Rather than functioning primarily as a large central parish, it is closely tied to the everyday life of Dangsudong and surrounding neighborhoods, helping Catholics continue their faith life close to home.

The choice of Saint Magdalena Heo Gye-im as patron is an important key to understanding the parish. By remembering the faith and courage of the Korean martyrs, the community encourages today’s faithful to preserve and witness to the Gospel in the ordinary circumstances of daily life.

History & origins

Dangsudong Parish began on September 23, 2005, as part of a diocesan reorganization that created several new parishes. By establishing Dangsudong and other communities, the Diocese of Suwon increased the number of parishes and adjusted territorial boundaries so that Catholics in Dangsudong and nearby neighborhoods could live their faith within an independent pastoral community.

According to the founding notice, the new parish initially covered all of Dangsudong and part of Ipbuk-dong in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. It began with 717 faithful in 238 households. From the outset it was a relatively small parish rooted in a local residential area, and one of its essential tasks was to provide nearby access to the Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis.

The Diocese of Suwon still records the same date as the parish’s foundation and lists Saint Magdalena Heo Gye-im as patron. The overall development from a newly organized local community to an established parish with a stable church and pastoral structure is clear, but this research did not find reliable official documentation for the detailed groundbreaking or dedication chronology of the church building, so those details have not been added.
