About this place
Dandaedong Catholic Church is a parish of the Seongnam District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Located in one of Seongnam’s long-established residential areas, it has served as a local community for the liturgical and sacramental life of Catholics in the area. Its patron is Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, and the Korean Catholic Directory records the presence of the Inbo Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in the parish apostolate.
Through the Mass, Confession, Baptism, Matrimony, catechesis, and parish groups, the community helps local Catholics live as the Church in their everyday lives. The spirituality of Saint Thérèse’s “little way” provides an important background for understanding parish life: approaching God through small acts of love and trust rather than through grand achievements.
Dandaedong Parish was separated and established during a period of rapid urban growth in Seongnam and has continued for many years as a center of Catholic community life. Although today it is one of several parishes in the Seongnam District, it also carries the memory of the period when the Catholic presence in the city was expanding and new parishes were being formed.
History & origins
The background to the establishment of Dandaedong Parish was the rapid urban growth and increase in Catholic population in Seongnam during the 1970s. According to the historical record of its mother parish, Sujin-dong, the community expanded greatly after Seongnam became a city, making it increasingly difficult for the existing parish alone to serve the enlarged area. A process of creating new parishes therefore began.
On October 5, 1976, Dandaedong Parish was separated from Sujin-dong Parish and formally established. About 1,300 Catholics from Dandae-dong, Sangdaewon-dong, Eunhaeng-dong, and parts of Jung-dong and Sinheung-dong transferred their parish registration to the new community. This was an important turning point in adapting pastoral structures to the expanding residential patterns of old Seongnam.
As the community grew, Dandaedong itself became a mother parish for another new community. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that Sangdaewon Parish was separated from Dandaedong on June 30, 1979. In only a few years, Dandaedong had therefore moved from being a newly established parish to playing a role in the further evangelization of neighboring districts.
Dandaedong Parish has since continued as one of the parishes of the Seongnam District. Its own separation from Sujin-dong and the later creation of a daughter parish from Dandaedong show how the pastoral map of the Diocese of Suwon became more detailed as the city of Seongnam changed and expanded.
