About this place
Daeyami Catholic Church is a parish of the Gunpo–Uiwang District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It is the local Catholic community of the Daeyami area of Gunpo, centered on the Mass and the sacraments. Its patron is Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose example of family life, work, and faithful care provides an important spiritual sign for the parish.
The parish serves not only the liturgical and sacramental life of local Catholics but also catechesis, ministry to young people and families, fellowship, and service. The formation of an independent parish in the western part of Gunpo, where newer residential areas meet older neighborhoods, made it possible for local Catholics to receive sustained pastoral care closer to home.
The present Daeyami church is also the result of years of effort by the parish community to secure and complete its own sacred space. Visitors can therefore understand the place more fully by seeing not only the building itself but also the story of a small new parish that gradually built its church through the shared commitment of its members.
History & origins
Daeyami Parish was established on August 31, 2010, after being separated from Yongho Parish. According to the Diocese of Suwon’s record of the later dedication, the new community began with 209 households and 526 faithful. Although relatively small at first, becoming an independent parish gave Catholics in the Daeyami area a stable pastoral community close to where they lived.
Soon after its establishment, the parish began working toward a church of its own. A groundbreaking Mass for the new church was celebrated in May 2012, marking the start of full construction, and the community moved into the new building and began celebrating Mass there in August 2013. Moving in did not mean that every aspect of construction and preparation was complete, however, and the parish continued the internal and external work needed for its sacred space.
On May 26, 2019, eight years and nine months after the parish was founded, Daeyami Parish celebrated the dedication of its new church, presided over by Bishop John the Baptist Moon Hee-jong, Vicar of the Second Vicariate. The celebration looked back on the years of church construction and expressed gratitude to the parishioners who had contributed to the work.
This history shows that Daeyami’s development was more than an administrative separation from a mother parish. Beginning as a small community, it passed through groundbreaking, occupancy, and dedication, gradually completing its own liturgical space. That shared experience remains an important part of the parish’s communal memory.
