About this place

Daehakdong Catholic Church is a parish of the Ansan District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It serves Catholics in the Daehakdong area of Sangnok-gu, Ansan, who gather around the Mass and the sacraments. Its patron is Saint Paul Chong Ha-sang, a Korean martyr, and the Korean Catholic Directory records the presence of the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul of Suwon in the parish apostolate.

The parish has long provided liturgy, sacramental life, catechesis, and faith activities for different generations. Because the community spent many years building and improving its church and related facilities, the present site is more than a structure: it carries the memory of prayer and sacrifice accumulated by several generations of parishioners.

The patronage of Saint Paul Chong Ha-sang is another important feature of Daehakdong Parish. Remembering a lay leader and martyr of the Korean Church highlights the meaning of a parish community in which laypeople, clergy, and religious together build up the local Church.

History & origins

The history of the church building at Daehakdong began even before the parish itself was formally established. According to the Diocese of Suwon, construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony on May 1, 1982, at the same time as work on the mother parish of Suam, now Wadong Parish. Financial difficulties, however, forced the project to stop after only the presbytery and the basement level of the church had been completed.

Daehakdong Parish was formally established on February 21, 1984, with Saint Paul Chong Ha-sang as patron. Even after the parish began, completion of the church remained an important challenge. Construction eventually resumed, and by December 1988 the church had reached the form that served the community for the following decades.

As time passed, the parish continued to improve the church and its related facilities and prepared for a formal dedication. Beginning in March 2024, the community undertook environmental improvements and interior and exterior work in preparation for the ceremony. On September 21, 2025, the church was dedicated in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Matthias Lee Yong-hoon of Suwon.

During the dedication, a relic of the parish patron, Saint Paul Chong Ha-sang, was placed in the church. The ceremony, held more than forty years after the first construction efforts of the early 1980s, brought together the story of financial hardship, interrupted building, continued improvement, and the perseverance of several generations of parishioners.
