About this place

Chowol Catholic Church is the church of Chowol Parish in the Gwangju District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Its patron is Saint Francis Choe Gyeong-hwan. It serves Catholics in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, as the center for Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and parish community life, gathering believers from several villages and residential areas into one worshiping community.

The present church is a permanent parish complex that combines liturgical space with areas for catechesis and meetings. As the community grew after the establishment of the parish, it prepared a new church and eventually celebrated its formal dedication, giving the parish a more stable center for Catholic life. The church commemorates the faith of its patron, Saint Francis Choe Gyeong-hwan, and remains a place where local Catholics continue prayer, sacramental life, formation, and fellowship together.

History & origins

Chowol Parish was established on October 1, 2004, after separating from Gwangju Parish. The founding date in the Catholic directory is consistent with the parish's twentieth-anniversary record in 2024, clearly marking the beginning of an independent Catholic parish community in the Chowol area. Saint Francis Choe Gyeong-hwan, a Korean martyr, was chosen as the patron.

As the community grew, plans for a new church advanced. Construction formally began with a groundbreaking Mass on January 30, 2016, presided over by Bishop Mathias Lee Seong-hyo, then vicar general. On May 13, 2017, the faithful celebrated an entrance Mass in the new church. The parish continued preparing for its formal dedication through years of prayer and contributions toward the building.

In 2024 the parish marked its twentieth anniversary, and on September 28 of that year Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon presided over the dedication of the church. The approximately two-decade journey from parish foundation to groundbreaking, entrance, and dedication shows how the Chowol Catholic community established both a stable physical home and a lasting spiritual foundation.
