About this place

Choji-dong Catholic Church is the church of Choji-dong Parish in the Ansan District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Its patron is Saint Joachim. It is the center of Catholic life for the faithful in and around Choji-dong, Danwon-gu, Ansan, where they gather for Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and parish community life. In an urban area that combines residential and industrial zones, the parish brings local Catholics together as one worshiping community and supports catechesis and small-community life across generations.

The present church includes not only the main worship space but also a large hall, classrooms, and meeting rooms needed for parish life. Choji-dong Church therefore functions as more than a place for Sunday and weekday liturgies; it is also a setting where the faithful learn, meet, and prepare for service. With Saint Joachim as its patron, the parish has the character of a local center for sustaining the faith of families and the wider Catholic community in Ansan.

History & origins

Choji-dong Parish was established in January 2003 after being separated from Ansan St. Mary Parish. For about eight years after its foundation, the community celebrated Mass in a temporary prefabricated building. As parish life became established, the need for a permanent church increased, and in 2007 the faithful reached a common decision to pursue construction through a parish-wide survey.

The parish designated 2010 as the year to begin the church-building project and formed a construction committee. A groundbreaking ceremony presided over by Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon was held in March 2011. In May 2012 the building received completion approval, and the first Mass was celebrated in the new church. The new complex, with one basement level and three above-ground floors, included a main church, a large hall, classrooms, meeting rooms, and parish offices.

This history shows how a community that began in a temporary structure gradually prepared a permanent home through years of planning and shared decision-making. The sequence from consultation and committee formation to groundbreaking and the first Mass demonstrates that the building of the church was part of the parish's long-term growth as a Catholic community.
