About this place
Chilbo Catholic Church is the church of Chilbo Parish in the Gwonseon District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Its patron is Saint John of the Cross. The parish is a center of Catholic life for the Homaesil and Geumgok areas of Suwon, where Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, small-community gatherings, and fellowship take place. Diocesan sources describe Chilbo as the first parish in the Homaesil area, giving it particular local significance as the Catholic community from which later parish development in the area grew.
The present church is a multi-level parish complex combining worship space with meeting, educational, and community facilities. Because parishioners spent many years preparing for the church's construction and dedication through prayer and offerings, it has a strong character as a house of faith built and sustained by the community. Chilbo Church remains a center of liturgy and fellowship for Catholics in the changing Homaesil residential area.
History & origins
Chilbo Parish was established in February 1996 with Seodun-dong Parish as its mother parish. The diocesan record of new parishes shows that the new community was created to serve all of Homaesil-dong and part of Geumgok-dong. It arose as a response to residential development and population change in western Suwon, giving local Catholics an independent parish community.
To build a permanent church, the parish held a groundbreaking ceremony in 2003 and celebrated an entrance Mass in the new church on October 17, 2004. Parishioners supported the construction through brick offerings and other fundraising efforts. The church, however, was not formally dedicated immediately after the move, and it continued to be used for worship while the community prepared for the eventual dedication.
On October 24, 2021, Bishop Mathias Lee Yong-hoon presided over both the church dedication and the Mass marking the parish's twenty-fifth anniversary. In preparation, the community undertook rosary campaigns and parish Bible-writing projects. The sequence from the parish's foundation in 1996 to its entrance into the church in 2004 and formal dedication in 2021 shows how Chilbo developed its physical and communal foundations step by step alongside the growth of the surrounding area.
