About this place
Cheonggye Catholic Church belongs to the Anyang 2 District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has St. Margaret Mary Alacoque as its patron. It is the local parish in which Catholics of the Poil and Cheonggye residential areas of Uiwang celebrate Mass and the sacraments and participate in catechesis and community activities. The life of its patron saint, closely associated with devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, provides an important background for understanding the parish’s spiritual orientation toward responding to God’s love and sharing that love with neighbors.
The present church is particularly meaningful because it was prepared through a long period of prayer and offerings by the parish community. Parishioners participated in the building process through many forms of fundraising as well as spiritual offerings, and the process itself became an occasion for strengthening the community. Cheonggye Catholic Church is therefore both a place where Catholics in a newly developed residential area can gather close to home for liturgy and the center of a parish whose shared effort took concrete form in its church building. Records that children, older parishioners, and people of many generations each contributed in their own way show that the church was created not by a single generation but through the collective participation of the wider community.
History & origins
Cheonggye Parish was established in late August 2010 through division from Poil and Indeogwon parishes. This was a response to changes in the Poil-Indeogwon living area and to the need to form a separate parish community for its Catholics. Once the independent parish was formed, its most important task was to secure a stable church in the new residential area.
Construction of a new church began in 2014, and the building was completed in 2015, when the community celebrated its entrance Mass. Parishioners participated widely in the project. Funds were raised through offerings for individual bricks, food sales, campaigns for the church site, small-community fundraising, and gifts of personal valuables, while rosary prayers and other spiritual offerings were also presented. The building project thus became a shared journey of faith for the entire parish. Records of children’s coin banks, family valuables, and proceeds from neighborhood groups show that parishioners were participants in creating the church rather than merely donors to a construction project.
Preparation for the formal dedication continued after the entrance Mass, and on October 16, 2022, the new church was dedicated in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Mathias Ri Iong-hoon. The process from parish establishment to entrance and final dedication extended over more than a decade and records how a Catholic community in a newly developed residential area created a permanent home for itself. The broad participation of parishioners through many small offerings remains one of the distinctive features of Cheonggye Parish’s formation. Diocesan reporting on the dedication emphasized that the sacrifice and devotion of parishioners over many years formed the basis for securing the church. The successive stages of establishment, construction, entrance, and dedication show the development of a new residential-area parish from a provisional beginning into a stable liturgical community.
