About this place
Cheongdeok Catholic Church is the church of Cheongdeok Parish in the Giheung District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Its patron is the Blessed Virgin Mary. It serves as the center of parish life for Catholics in Cheongdeok-dong and the surrounding area of Giheung-gu, Yongin, where the faithful gather for Mass, the sacraments, prayer, catechesis, faith formation, small-community meetings, and fellowship.
The present church complex brings together the principal worship space with areas for education and parish community life. After a long period in which the community worshiped in a temporary church, the completion of a permanent church and education building gave the parish a stable setting in which liturgy, formation, and communal activities could be connected. Its significance therefore lies not simply in the building itself, but in its role as the place where the local Catholic community gathers to pray, learn, and live the Gospel together.
History & origins
Cheongdeok Parish was established in 2008 after being separated from Guseong Parish. Beginning the following year, the community celebrated Mass in a temporary church, and securing a permanent church became a long-term task. Diocesan records of heavy rain in 2020 note that the sacristy and floor of the temporary prefabricated church were flooded, showing that the parish continued to rely on provisional facilities for a considerable period after its foundation.
After years of preparation, a groundbreaking Mass for the new church was celebrated on May 7, 2022, at the present site. The planned building was a reinforced-concrete structure with one basement level and three floors, including the church, a large hall, classrooms, a convent, and a rectory. The construction record of the Diocese of Suwon lists the church and education-building project as beginning in June 2022 and being completed in October 2023.
This sequence marks the parish's development from a community worshiping in temporary facilities to one with a permanent church of its own. The completion of the new building was an important turning point because it provided stable space for liturgy, formation, and community life after many years of preparation.
