About this place

Cheongbuk Catholic Church is the church of Cheongbuk Parish in the Songtan District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Its patron is Saint Gabriel the Archangel. The church is the center of Catholic life in Cheongbuk-eup, Pyeongtaek, where the faithful gather for Mass and the sacraments, receive faith formation, and build parish community. In an area that combines older rural communities with newer residential development, the parish brings people of different generations and living environments together as one worshiping community.

The present church is a permanent setting not only for liturgy but also for catechesis, meetings, and fellowship. It replaced the prefabricated temporary church used by the parish community for many years and provides a stable base for worship, sacramental life, education, and service. In this sense, Cheongbuk Church serves as a local center that supports the continuing life of the Catholic community.

History & origins

Cheongbuk Parish was established in 2011 after being separated from Anjung Parish. The community initially built a prefabricated church on the present site in Cheongbuk-eup, Pyeongtaek. Over time, the limitations of the temporary building, including poor conditions and noise-related difficulties, increased the need for a permanent church.

In early 2019 the parish consulted its members and decided to build a new church, formally announcing the project in February of that year. Parishioners then prepared for construction through offerings and fundraising, and the groundbreaking ceremony was held on February 29, 2020. After about thirteen months of work, a new reinforced-concrete building with one basement level and three above-ground floors was completed.

On April 10, 2021, the parish celebrated the entrance Mass for the new church, presided over by Bishop Mathias Lee Seong-hyo as the diocesan delegate. The movement from a prefabricated chapel to a permanent church through the shared decision and offerings of the faithful shows the development of the parish community. The new church gave Cheongbuk Parish a stable foundation for continuing its Catholic life in the region.
