About this place

Cheolsan 3-dong Catholic Church belongs to the Gwangmyeong District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the Family, as its patron. It is a relatively young parish serving a large residential area of Cheolsan-dong, Gwangmyeong, where Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments and take part in catechesis and community life. While inheriting the faith tradition of its mother parish, Cheolsan, it has established itself as an independent community that allows Catholics in the newer residential area to participate in parish life close to home.

The present church was created by converting an existing neighborhood commercial building for religious use and includes a church, educational and meeting spaces, and a rectory. Although the parish encountered the COVID-19 pandemic almost immediately after its establishment, it later worked to reactivate the Legion of Mary and other community activities and to strengthen its foundations. With Mary, Queen of the Family, as its patron, the parish’s present significance lies in caring for the faith of families and neighbors within their immediate living area. The conversion of an existing building into spaces for liturgy and formation also offers a concrete example of how a new urban parish can take root within the practical conditions of its neighborhood.

History & origins

Preparation for Cheolsan 3-dong Parish took concrete form in 2015, when its mother parish, Cheolsan, purchased a neighborhood commercial building on Anyangcheon-ro in Gwangmyeong. In response to population growth and changes in the residential pattern of Cheolsan, the mother parish prepared for a division, and on December 17, 2019, Cheolsan 3-dong Parish was established as a separate parish. Because the new community did not yet have an independent church, it continued its liturgical and Catholic life at the mother church for a time.

After establishment, the community proceeded with the process of converting the purchased building into a church. In 2020 it obtained permission from Gwangmyeong City to change the building’s use to a religious facility, passed review by the diocesan architecture committee, and carried out interior and exterior renovation for about thirteen months. On December 18, 2021, the parish finally celebrated its entrance Mass and began parish life in the present church, two years after its establishment. The building provided spaces for liturgy, education, meetings, and the rectory. Parishioners also prepared spiritually, offering rosary prayers for the establishment of their church. The decision to convert a commercial building rather than construct an entirely new structure remains a practical example of how an urban parish adapted existing space for Catholic worship and formation.

The parish encountered the COVID-19 pandemic almost immediately after its foundation, making it difficult to organize the pastoral council and devotional groups fully. When in-person activities returned, efforts continued to rebuild community organizations and strengthen fellowship and service. A 2024 diocesan report described the Legion of Mary at Cheolsan 3-dong as increasing both its membership and activity after the pandemic, helping to strengthen the parish’s foundations. Within its short history, separation from the mother parish, creation of a church, and the pandemic have all shaped the community. The early history of Cheolsan 3-dong can therefore be seen as a period in which physical church space and pastoral organizations had to be built at the same time.
