About this place
Bundang St. Matthew Catholic Church is a parish of the Bundang District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, with St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist as its patron saint. The official Catholic directory in Korea identifies it as the district-center parish of Bundang. Located in a central residential area of Bundang New Town, it serves the faithful through Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, devotional life, and parish community activities, while also functioning as a point of connection for church activities at the district level.
The Sisters of the Caritas of Jesus participate in the parish’s pastoral life, and the community is organized around the church itself without mission stations. When the parish prepared for its twenty-fifth anniversary, it did not focus only on personal devotion but set out three connected directions: spiritual renewal, apostolic activity, and creating a church that is safe and conducive to prayer. Its official status as a district-center parish means that activities of nearby parishes and the vicariate can also be linked through this community, while priests, religious sisters, and lay parishioners together sustain liturgy, education, and service. Bundang St. Matthew is therefore best understood not simply as a large urban parish but as a pastoral center that brings together worship, faith formation, community participation, and apostolic life within the Bundang District.
History & origins
Bundang St. Matthew Parish was established on February 8, 1995. During the rapid development of Bundang New Town in the 1990s, the Diocese of Suwon expanded parishes and church buildings to serve Catholics moving into the new residential districts. Diocesan records describe the building of Bundang St. John, Bundang St. Matthew, and the St. Mark parish that later became Bundang Yatap-dong as an important part of establishing a Catholic pastoral base in the new town. The community dedicated to St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist took root within this broader development.
As the parish grew, new Catholic communities were in turn separated from it. In January 1999, Geumgok-dong Parish, today’s Bundang St. Luke Parish, was established by separation from Bundang St. Matthew. This shows that St. Matthew did not merely become established as a single neighborhood parish; it also served as a mother parish in the continuing expansion of Catholic communities into nearby living areas.
In 2018, as it looked toward its twenty-fifth anniversary, the parish proclaimed “Matthew Vision 25.” Through a preparatory committee and consultation, it identified spiritual renewal and conversion, apostolic activity and stronger community life, and the creation of a safe church conducive to prayer as central goals. Practical plans included Bible programs, retreats, small-community participation, training for volunteers, renovation of the church, and publication of a parish history. The preparation was therefore not simply a plan for an anniversary event but a process of reconsidering what kind of community the parish should become, linking the renewal of the physical church with the preservation of parish memory. The diocesan chronology records a Mass for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the parish in September 2020. From its beginnings during the building of Bundang New Town, through its role as a mother parish for a new community, and into its anniversary-based renewal, Bundang St. Matthew developed into the district-center parish it is today. Its history reflects both the physical growth of the new town and the parish’s continuing effort to renew its faith and apostolic mission as the local Church matured.
