About this place

Bundang Imae-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Bundang District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, with St. Paul the Apostle as its patron saint. The official Catholic directory in Korea currently lists the parish at Yanghyeon-ro in Imae-dong under the name “Bundang Imae-dong.” With no mission stations attached to it, the church is the center where Catholics of the local area gather for Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.

The identity of a parish under the patronage of St. Paul the Apostle is closely connected with the basic Catholic mission of proclaiming the Gospel and building up the Christian community. Within the planned urban environment of Bundang, the parish provides a nearby pastoral home for liturgy, faith formation for different generations, devotional life, and fellowship. Although the present official name again emphasizes the geographic name Imae-dong, the parish website and earlier diocesan records preserve the period when St. Paul was more directly expressed in the parish name, showing that the local place name and the tradition of its patron saint have both remained part of the community’s identity. The current official directory and diocesan schedules consistently point to the same parish and address, confirming the continuity of the community and place despite changes in naming.

History & origins

Bundang Imae-dong Parish was established on February 14, 1997. It became an independent community at a time when the residential areas of Bundang New Town were expanding and new parishes were needed close to the everyday lives of Catholics. St. Paul the Apostle was chosen as its patron saint, and the parish developed as the independent Catholic community responsible for liturgy, the sacraments, and catechesis in the Imae-dong area.

On March 10, 2011, the Diocese of Suwon formally approved changing the name then in use, “Imae-dong St. Paul,” to “Bundang St. Paul.” This was one part of a broader reorganization of parish names in the Bundang area. The official Catholic directory today again uses the name “Bundang Imae-dong,” but the publicly available diocesan records do not identify the precise date of the transition to the current form. St. Paul the Apostle has continued to be listed as the patron saint throughout.

On October 9, 2022, the Diocese of Suwon recorded a Mass celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the parish. The anniversary officially marked nearly a generation of continuous Catholic community life in the Imae-dong area. The sequence from the 1997 establishment to the 2011 name adjustment and the twenty-fifth-anniversary Mass illustrates the parish’s rootedness in Bundang’s local community. Without adding unverified construction dates or relocation details, the official record shows continuity in both the parish’s pastoral identity and its dedication to St. Paul despite changes in the form of its name.
