About this place

Bugok-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Gunpo–Uiwang District of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, with St. Joseph the Worker as its patron saint. It is the local parish where Catholics in the Bugok area of Gunpo gather for Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, devotional life, and fellowship. With no mission stations attached to it, pastoral life is organized around the parish community itself. Its patronage of St. Joseph the Worker naturally resonates with a community seeking to live its faith within ordinary homes and workplaces.

The Diocese of Suwon has highlighted as one example of parish renewal the small “cell groups” formed by Bugok-dong parishioners around common interests, age groups, and themes from daily life. Rather than linking people only through administrative districts, this approach creates additional paths for fellowship and participation through shared interests. The diocesan account describes these cells as voluntary groups of at least three people who gather around hobbies or other interests, offering another way to build relationships alongside existing small Christian communities and parish organizations. Today Bugok-dong Catholic Church therefore shows the character of a neighborhood parish that places liturgy and the sacraments at its center while helping parishioners form relationships and smaller communities within everyday life.

History & origins

Bugok-dong Parish was established on August 31, 2010, in response to the development of the Bugok housing district in Gunpo. The diocesan notice at the time called it the “Bugok-dong Parish (provisional name)” and assigned it jurisdiction over part of Bugok-dong, including the new development area. Although a parish site had been secured in Bugok-dong, Uiwang Catholic Church served as the temporary parish at first. The founding community was recorded as 285 Catholics in 89 households.

On March 10, 2011, the diocese formally approved the parish name and patron, confirming “Bugok-dong St. Joseph” and St. Joseph the Worker. In 2014, a diocesan reorganization changed the parish’s district affiliation from the Uiwang District to the Gunpo District. The current Catholic directory in Korea lists the parish under the name “Bugok-dong” in the Gunpo–Uiwang District of the Second Vicariate, while continuing to identify St. Joseph the Worker as its patron saint. The 2014 adjustment changed its administrative grouping, but its local ministry continued to center on the Bugok living area; today’s Gunpo–Uiwang District reflects subsequent diocesan reorganization.

Once the parish had taken root, pastoral emphasis increasingly moved from establishing territory and facilities toward deepening participation. In 2022 the Diocese of Suwon introduced Bugok-dong’s cell-group ministry, in which three or more parishioners could gather voluntarily around shared interests. Alongside existing district and parish-group structures, the initiative created new relationship networks for people who might otherwise find it difficult to participate. The history of Bugok-dong thus traces a progression from a small parish founded amid new-town development, through the establishment and adjustment of its ecclesial organization, to pastoral efforts aimed at strengthening fellowship within everyday life.
