About this place

Bongdam Catholic Church is a parish in the Hwaseong District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, with St. Francis of Assisi as its patron saint. It is the parish in which Catholics of the Bongdam area of Hwaseong gather for Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Because the community was formed by separating from Wangnim Parish, its identity is also connected with the expansion of the Catholic pastoral network across the Hwaseong area.

After many years of worshipping in a relatively simple temporary church, the parish has worked to create a more stable permanent setting for liturgy and education. The diocesan plan for the new church includes a main church, catechetical rooms, a priests’ residence, and multipurpose space. The project is intended not merely to replace an aging temporary structure but to gather, in a durable way, the liturgical, educational, and fellowship functions that the parish has long needed. This illustrates the role of Bongdam Catholic Church as a local parish where children and young people receive catechesis, parish groups meet, and the community gathers around the Eucharist. Its patron, St. Francis of Assisi, also expresses a spiritual identity centered on prayer and the Gospel way of life.

History & origins

Bongdam Parish was established on January 30, 2001, after separating from Wangnim Parish. When the first pastor arrived, the community began its ministry using containers and a factory-type building, and soon constructed a prefabricated church. The parish continued to celebrate Mass, conduct catechesis, and build community life in that setting for more than two decades.

As the building aged and the community developed, the need for a permanent new church became more pressing. Diocesan records state that the parish accumulated construction funds over many years and began a focused fundraising campaign for a new church in 2020. In 2024 it formed a building committee, proceeded through diocesan architectural review and design work, and in 2025 completed the building-permit and contractor-selection procedures required for construction.

On October 18, 2025, a groundbreaking Mass and ceremony for the new church were held with the vicar general of the Diocese of Suwon presiding. The building is planned with one basement level and three floors above ground, a total floor area of about 1,994 square meters, and facilities including the main church, catechetical rooms, a priests’ residence, and a multipurpose room. Completion is targeted for January 2027. The diocese has also stated that the existing church will be demolished after provisional approval is granted for use of the new building, which will effectively close the long period centered on the temporary church that began in 2001. The construction project is therefore a major stage in a parish history shaped by years of prayer, fundraising, and preparation for a permanent church home.
