About this place
Bojeong Catholic Church is a parish of the Giheung District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, with St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus as its patron saint. The official Catholic directory in Korea lists Bojeong as the district-center parish of Giheung. With no mission stations attached to it, the parish serves as a local pastoral center where Catholics in the Bojeong area gather for Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
The present church building is a contemporary Catholic church in the middle of a new-town residential area, vertically organizing spaces for liturgy, catechesis, and fellowship. According to Gyeonggi Province’s architectural records, the first floor contains lobby, administrative, and gathering functions; the second floor contains catechetical and seminar rooms; and the main church occupies the third through fifth floors. The main worship space was designed around a strong sense of verticality, skylights, and light filtering between the walls so that attention is drawn toward the altar. The way liturgy, faith formation, and encounters between parishioners and local residents are connected within one building is a distinctive feature of the church. The architectural record also explains that the lower levels were conceived as bright, transparent, and open to local residents regardless of religious affiliation. In this way, the building combines the hierarchy of the sacred interior with openness toward the surrounding neighborhood.
History & origins
Bojeong Parish was established in the Diocese of Suwon on October 1, 2004. It was the point at which the Catholic community in the Bojeong area, developing alongside residential growth in northwestern Yongin, took shape as an independent parish. St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus was designated as its patron saint. The parish thereafter developed its pastoral base as one of the parishes serving the Giheung area.
Public architectural records state that the present church was designed and newly constructed from May 2008 to March 2011. It was built on a site of about 1,929 square meters, with two basement levels and five floors above ground, and a total floor area of about 5,892 square meters. The design placed the varied functions of a Catholic parish vertically within a single building. Several years after the parish was founded, this project gave concrete form to a permanent church home for the community.
The completed Bojeong church also received public recognition for its architectural quality. The Architecture & Urban Research Information Center records that it received an Excellence Award in the completed-building category of the 2012 Korean Architecture Awards. The project was noted for combining the verticality and light of a religious interior with lower floors open to the surrounding community in an ordinary new-town residential setting. The award materials particularly highlighted the contrast between the open lobby and café on the first floor and the main church on the upper levels. Thus the history of Bojeong Parish extends beyond its establishment to the creation of a permanent church building that accommodated the growing community and came to be recognized as an example of contemporary Catholic architecture.
