About this place
Bijeon-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Pyeongtaek District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving the Catholic community in and around Bijeon-dong. The Catholic Directory in Korea identifies it as a central parish of the Pyeongtaek District, reflecting its role as a pastoral point of connection with neighboring parishes. Its designation as a district-central parish indicates that, alongside ordinary parish ministry, it also serves as a point of connection among the Catholic communities of the wider Pyeongtaek District.
The parish developed in response to population growth and the increasing Catholic community in eastern Pyeongtaek. Today its facilities support not only Mass and the sacraments but also catechesis and parish community activities, and they have been expanded over time to meet changing pastoral needs.
Bijeon-dong has the character of a relatively large urban parish formed alongside the expansion of Pyeongtaek. Seen together with the later establishment of neighboring parishes such as Jinsa-ri, Yongi-dong, and Sosabeol, it is an important place for understanding how Catholic communities in southeastern Pyeongtaek have grown and become more locally organized.
History & origins
The origins of Bijeon-dong Parish lie in the growth of the Catholic population in the eastern part of Pyeongtaek Parish and plans to build a new church there. In 1987, Pyeongtaek Parish formed a committee for the project and purchased land in Bijeon-dong in 1988. The property was expropriated by the city in 1990, however, so the parish acquired the present site in 1991. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 6, 1992, and additional adjoining land was later secured as preparations continued for a new parish. Because the first site was taken for a public project, the community had to revise its plans and secure a new location. The process shows that establishing the future parish church was not a simple building project, but one that required repeated adjustment to changes in urban development.
On January 20, 1995, Fr. Benedict Hwang Chang-yeon was appointed the founding pastor and Bijeon-dong Parish was separated from Pyeongtaek Parish. The church building was completed the following month, and a consecration ceremony was held in June. Because the establishment of the parish and completion of the church occurred almost at the same time, the new community began with its own stable space for worship and formation. The completion and dedication of the church soon after the parish was established meant that administrative independence and the creation of a dedicated liturgical space advanced together, allowing the new community to acquire a stable parish identity quickly.
Growth continued to reshape the parish's boundaries. Jinsa-ri Parish was separated from Bijeon-dong in 1998, and other new parishes later emerged as the Catholic population of eastern Pyeongtaek increased. The diocesan historical record also notes a thanksgiving Mass for an expansion of Bijeon-dong Church in May 2022, showing that the parish continued to enlarge its facilities as pastoral needs developed. The later expansion also shows that the parish did not remain within the limits of its original facilities, but continued adapting its space as the size and pastoral needs of the community changed.
