About this place
Bibong Catholic Church is a parish of the Hwaseong District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving the Catholic community in Bibong-myeon, Maesong-myeon, and the surrounding area of Hwaseong. Its patron saints are the Korean martyrs St. Augustine Park Jong-won and St. Barbara Ko Sun-i, making the faith of the Korean martyrs an important spiritual point of reference for the parish.
The present church building is a permanent church prepared after the community had spent many years worshipping in a temporary structure. It includes the main worship space as well as rooms for catechesis, the priest’s residence, and the parish office. The site therefore functions not only as a place for liturgy but also as a center for catechesis, pastoral activity, and fellowship among local Catholics. Bringing worship, educational, and pastoral spaces together at one site also supports the parish’s role in regularly gathering and connecting Catholics from its broad territory.
Amid continuing changes in settlement patterns and development in the Bibong area, the parish serves as a Catholic center linking communities across the western part of Hwaseong. For visitors, it offers an example of how a territorial parish can provide continuity of faith and community life within a changing residential area.
History & origins
Bibong Parish was established on January 30, 2001. It began as a new parish serving Bibong-myeon and Maesong-myeon in Hwaseong, but it did not immediately have a permanent church. For more than two decades after its establishment, the community continued its Masses and parish life in a single-story prefabricated building used as a temporary church. An important feature of the parish’s early history is that the community came first: for many years, a prefabricated temporary structure had to carry the ordinary liturgical and parish life before a permanent church could be built.
After this long period in temporary facilities, the parish began construction of a permanent church. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 26, 2022, presided over by Bishop Lino Lee Seong-hyo, then vicar of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. Construction continued for about a year, with the new building planned as a basement-and-three-story complex containing the church, catechetical rooms, a priest's residence, and parish offices. The project did more than enlarge the place for worship: by bringing catechetical rooms, the priest’s residence, and the parish office together with the church, it gave the community a more stable foundation for education and pastoral work than the temporary facility had allowed.
On May 6, 2023, Bishop Lee presided over the Mass marking the parish's move into the new church. It was the moment when the parish, after years in temporary space, gained a stable setting for worship, formation, and pastoral life. This history shows Bibong not as a parish created all at once around a finished complex, but as a community that sustained its Catholic life for many years and gradually built the physical foundation needed for its long-term mission. The fact that a permanent parish complex was completed only after many years also shows that the continuity of the local Catholic community preceded the building itself, with the new church becoming a concrete home for a community life that had already been sustained over time.
