About this place
Beomgye Catholic Church is a parish of the Anyang 1 District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving the Mass, sacraments, and faith formation of Catholics in the urban neighborhoods of Dongan-gu, Anyang. The parish's official overview identifies Pyeongchon Catholic Church as its mother parish and names St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon as its patron. Honoring Korea's first Catholic priest and a martyr saint gives the parish a clear spiritual identity.
The present church is the independent parish church built after the community was established, serving as the center of both liturgy and parish activities. The official website preserves not only current parish information but also a substantial chronological archive of parish history, showing that the community has continued to record its own formation and development over time.
Beomgye has the regional character of a parish that grew in the urban setting of Anyang near Pyeongchon New Town. Rather than viewing it simply as one church building in the city, visitors can understand it as a community separated from an older parish in response to urban growth, which then secured its own church and accumulated more than a generation of parish history.
History & origins
Beomgye Parish was established on August 4, 1998, after being separated from Pyeongchon Parish against the background of urban growth and Catholic expansion in the Pyeongchon area. The official parish overview names St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon as patron and explicitly identifies Pyeongchon as the mother parish. The new community assumed responsibility for a new urban pastoral territory in Anyang and, from its beginning, faced the task of preparing a permanent church and facilities for parish life.
The official parish chronicle records major events in detail from the first year of the parish. The community moved beyond its initial temporary stage, developed its organization, and worked toward a church where liturgy, formation, and parish groups could continue on a stable basis. The fact that these developments have been preserved year by year shows that the history of the parish's growth has itself been treated as an important part of the community's heritage.
On June 9, 2002, the church was dedicated in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Paul Choi Deok-ki. About four years after the parish was established, the formal dedication of an independent church completed an important part of its physical foundation. The church then became the lasting center of a parish community passing through successive generations in the urban area of Dongan-gu, Anyang.
The Diocese of Suwon records a Mass for the 25th anniversary of Beomgye Parish on November 5, 2023. Looking back over a generation confirmed the continuity of the settlement process that had begun with separation from Pyeongchon in 1998 and the church dedication in 2002. The parish's history thus follows a clear pattern of division in response to urban growth, dedication of an independent church, and the accumulation of a carefully recorded community history.
