About this place
Beodeunae Catholic Church is a parish of the Gwonseon District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It is a center where Catholics in the Se-ryu and Gwonseon area of Suwon celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis and parish life. The Korean Catholic Directory records St. Paul Chong Hasang as its patron. Located within an urban residential district, the parish has the clear character of a local church that provides liturgy and formation close to the daily lives of its members.
The present church is directly connected with the building effort undertaken by the community in the early years of the parish. A Catholic Times record of the dedication describes how parishioners worked together to prepare the new church and how, after completion, it was formally dedicated by the diocesan bishop. The building therefore carries the meaning of a spiritual home created collectively as the new parish became established, rather than simply functioning as a meeting hall.
Its patron, St. Paul Chong Hasang, is a Korean Catholic martyr remembered as a layman who worked to sustain the Church and to bring clergy to the Korean Catholic community. By honoring him as patron, Beodeunae Parish links devotion to the Korean martyrs with the ordinary liturgical and communal faith life of Catholics in the neighborhood.
History & origins
Beodeunae Parish was established on February 14, 1997, as a new parish in the Gwonseon area of Suwon. One of the most urgent tasks after its establishment was to secure a permanent church. A groundbreaking ceremony for the new church was held in May of the same year, so construction became a major parish project almost immediately after the community was formed.
Construction continued for about one year and four months. According to Catholic Times, the church was completed through the sacrifices and offerings of parishioners and the work of those involved in the project. On September 26, 1998, the new church was formally dedicated in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Paul Choi Deok-ki. Diocesan clergy and parishioners joined the celebration, marking the point at which the new parish gained a stable liturgical home. The dedication was an important milestone because the community established its physical foundation within a relatively short period after its creation.
Beodeunae Parish subsequently grew together with the changing urban neighborhoods of Suwon. Its history moved from the intense early period of constructing a church to a stage in which liturgy, formation, and community life continued around the completed parish center. The church building itself became a historical focus of the community, preserving the memory of the offerings and labor of its early members.
The Diocese of Suwon records a Mass for the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Beodeunae Parish on September 18, 2022. The anniversary confirmed that the foundation laid by the parish establishment in 1997 and the church dedication in 1998 had continued across a generation. Its history can therefore be summarized as the creation of a new parish, the building of its church, and its gradual settlement as an enduring urban Catholic community.
