About this place

Baegam Catholic Church is a parish of the Cheoin District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving as a center for liturgy, the sacraments, and catechesis for Catholics in Baegam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin. The official diocesan parish page names St. John the Apostle and Evangelist as its patron. Located in the rural southeastern part of Yongin, the parish connects Catholics living across a relatively broad local area.

The parish is best understood not only through its present administrative form but also within the history of repeated expansion and reorganization of Catholic communities in Yongin. The official diocesan page and the Korean Catholic Directory give different establishment years. Research indicates that this is not simply a data error but reflects two historical layers: an initial establishment as a parish and a later suppression followed by re-establishment.

Baegam is therefore a normally functioning parish of the Diocese of Suwon today, while in local Catholic history it is also a community that once had parish status, returned to the jurisdiction of another parish because of a shortage of priests, and later became independent again. That layered experience is an important part of understanding its present identity.

History & origins

The Baegam area long belonged to the pastoral territory of Yangji Parish in eastern Yongin. A study of the historical development of Catholic communities in Yongin explains that Catholic growth after liberation and the Korean War led to the creation of new parishes in the early 1960s. In that process, Baegam Parish was first separated from Yangji Parish and established in 1962. The Diocese of Suwon's official parish page records October 7, 1962, as the establishment date because it uses this first foundation as its reference point.

Soon after the Diocese of Suwon itself was established in 1963, however, the new diocese faced a serious shortage of priests. The historical study states that Baegam Parish was suppressed in 1964 together with several other parishes, including Cheolli, and that the Catholic community in Baegam returned to the care of Yangji Parish as a mission station. The history of Baegam was therefore not an uninterrupted parish history from 1962 onward; it included a period of independence followed by a return to mission-station status.

As industrialization, urbanization, and population movement later brought renewed Catholic growth to Yongin, parish structures were again subdivided. The need for an independent parish in Baegam increased, and in September 2003 it was separated from Yangji Parish and re-established. The Korean Catholic Directory gives September 30, 2003, as the establishment date, evidently using this re-establishment as its reference point.

The fact that the Diocese of Suwon gives 1962 while the Korean Catholic Directory gives 2003 therefore reflects different historical reference points. Read together, the records show three stages: the first establishment, suppression and return to mission-station status because of the shortage of priests, and independence again decades later. This sequence illustrates both the difficult pastoral conditions of the early Diocese of Suwon and the later growth of the Catholic community in the Yongin area.
