About this place
안성 성당 is a parish of the Anseong District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and is one of the long-established centers of Catholic life in the Anseong area. Its patron is Our Lady of Good Counsel, and the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Mirinae assist in parish ministry. Through the long development of Catholicism in the region, the parish also came to have the character of a mother parish from which other local Catholic communities grew.
Within the parish grounds, visitors can encounter church architecture and religious traces from different periods. The old church, combining elements of traditional Korean architecture with Western church design, illustrates how the Catholic community took root within local culture, while the later church facilities serve the present parish for liturgy, education, and fellowship. Preserving the old church alongside the newer liturgical space allows the parish to maintain its historical memory without separating it from current pastoral life.
History & origins
The beginnings of the Anseong parish are closely connected with the formation of the local Catholic community around the turn of the twentieth century. According to the Diocese of Suwon, Bishop Gustave Charles Marie Mutel visited Anseong in 1900, and local Catholics worked toward the establishment of a parish and the acquisition of a church site. The parish was formally established on October 19 of that year, and an existing Korean-style house was adapted for use as the first church.
As the community grew, a larger church became necessary. In 1922 the old church that still survives today was constructed. Father Victor Louis Poisnel took part in its design and construction. The building is noted for combining Korean timber construction and roof forms with the spatial organization of a Western basilica. Its significance therefore lies not only in its age but also in the way Catholic sacred architecture was expressed through an encounter with Korean building traditions.
The parish name also changed over time. From 1970 it was known as “Gupo-dong Catholic Church,” but in 2000, on the centenary of the parish, the original name “Anseong Catholic Church” was restored. A new church space commemorating the centenary was also established, allowing the historic church and the contemporary liturgical space to stand together as witnesses to different periods of parish life.
The history of 안성 성당 thus runs from an early church adapted from a traditional house to the construction of the distinctive old church, changes in parish name, and renewal around the centenary. It shows how a small local community grew over many decades while preserving the memory of earlier generations and creating new space for the continuing life of the parish.
