About this place
안산성요셉 성당 is a Catholic parish of the Ansan District in the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. It serves as a place where Catholics in the Sangnok-gu area of Ansan gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. Its patron is Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The life of Saint Joseph, who cared for Jesus and Mary and quietly responded to God’s will, offers the faithful an important model of fidelity in family life and work.
The church is more than a building for liturgical celebrations; it is also a center for faith formation across generations, care for neighbors, and encounters within the parish community. The name of Saint Joseph naturally evokes Catholic virtues of protection, responsibility, and faithful labor, helping parishioners connect everyday life with faith. In the urban setting of Ansan, the parish is a local expression of the Church where people pray together and support one another. The example of its patron also invites lay Catholics to reflect on responsible Christian living in the family, workplace, and wider community.
History & origins
The Parish of 안산성요셉 was established by the Diocese of Suwon on January 28, 2003. After the new parish was formed, securing a stable church where the community could celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis and gatherings became a major task. In its early years, the faithful laid the foundations of the parish while preparing for the construction of a permanent church.
That effort bore fruit in a new church, which was dedicated on July 1, 2007, in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Matthias Lee Yong-hoon, then vicar general of the Diocese of Suwon. Contemporary reporting describes the church in Idong, Sangnok-gu as a two-story building designed to support liturgy, education, and fellowship. The years between the establishment of the parish and the dedication of the church were therefore a period in which both the physical setting and the communal structures of parish life were built together.
Since then, 안산성요셉 성당 has taken root in the area as a parish under the patronage of Saint Joseph. The two key stages of its history are the establishment of the parish and the dedication of its permanent church. The first stage focused on organizing a new Catholic community, while the second provided a stable setting for liturgy, catechesis, and parish life. The present church stands on the foundations built by that early community, and its completion also marks the point at which the parish moved beyond its initial transitional phase into a more settled form of life.
