About this place

안중 성당 is a parish of the Songtan District in the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, serving Catholics in Anjung-eup and the western part of Pyeongtaek. Its patron is Saint Joseph the Worker, and the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul of Suwon assist in parish ministry. The parish is also connected with mission-station communities in the surrounding area, supporting Catholic life across a relatively broad local territory.

The present church is a gathering place for Catholics where rural traditions meet the urban and industrial life of western Pyeongtaek. Its design carries symbolism related to the local setting, and its interior provides spaces for liturgy, education, and prayer. Because the church was realized through many years of prayer and contributions by parishioners, the parish continues to be understood as a community shaped by cooperation and perseverance. Saint Joseph the Worker also offers Catholics in their daily occupations a model of integrating faith with the dignity of work.

History & origins

The Parish of 안중 was established by the Diocese of Suwon on January 10, 1966. As the Catholic population and parish activities in Anjung and western Pyeongtaek expanded, the need for a larger and more adequate setting for worship and education became increasingly important. The community therefore began a long process of preparing for a new church, gathering both prayer and material contributions.

Construction formally began with the groundbreaking in 1996. The project was not completed quickly; the parish continued the work for about a decade. Diocesan records note that parishioners offered extensive Rosary prayers and contributed in many different ways toward the building project. The construction of the church was thus experienced not simply as a building program but as a long spiritual undertaking shared by the whole parish.

The new church was dedicated on April 29, 2006, by Bishop Paul Choi Deok-ki, then Bishop of Suwon. That year also marked the fortieth anniversary of the parish. The building has an exterior recalling the form of a ship, a reference to Pyeongtaek Port and the local environment, and includes a lower chapel, the main church, a choir area, and a chapel for Eucharistic adoration.

The history from parish establishment to church dedication reflects the growth of the Catholic community alongside changes in the region. The prolonged period of prayer and giving is especially important, because it shows that the present church was not the work of a single moment but the fruit of several generations of shared effort. The completed church gathered the accumulated strength of the parish into a permanent home for its liturgical and communal life.
