About this place
Susong-dong Parish is a parish of the Diocese of Jeonju in Gunsan, with a pastoral territory centered on the new residential district of Susong-dong and its many apartment complexes. Its patron is St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, and the parish day is celebrated on her feast day, October 1.
The character of Susong-dong Parish is closely tied to the expansion of Gunsan's residential center. It was established so that Catholics in newly developed neighborhoods, increasingly distant from existing parish churches, could continue their life of Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community close to home. Today it serves as the central Catholic community of the Susong-dong living area.
History & origins
As occupancy in the Susong housing development increased in early 2009, a new parish community was organized. According to diocesan records, Susong-dong Parish was created in February 2009 through the separation of parts of the territories of Jigok Parish and Naun 2 Parish. Residents of the new Susong district and Catholics from the former Jigok Dongsin area formed the core of the new community.
The new parish did not begin with a permanent church building. On February 22, 2009, it celebrated its first Mass in a temporary worship space on the third floor of a building in Susong-dong. As the community became established, construction of a new church began in October 2010.
On June 11, 2011, Bishop Lee Byung-ho presided over the dedication of the new church. The building was a single-story steel structure with about 250 seats, allowing a community that had begun in rented space to have its own church within roughly two years. The early history of Susong-dong Parish thus reflects the process of building a pastoral base for a newly formed residential community as Gunsan's new urban district developed.
