About this place
St. Peter Yu Tae-chol Church is a parish church of the Catholic Diocese of Cheongju, located in Songjeol-dong, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do. The diocese lists the parish in its Heungdeok district and identifies St. Peter Yu Tae-chol as its patron saint. Its identity is especially clear in that the parish itself bears the name of a Korean Catholic saint.
The church is the center of the parish where local Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue communal prayer and faith formation. Bearing the saint’s name connects the community’s religious identity with the Korean Catholic tradition of the saints. History & origins
St. Peter Yu Tae-chol Parish was established on September 13, 2006, according to the official records of the Diocese of Cheongju. The parish began with St. Peter Yu Tae-chol as its patron saint, and both the establishment date and patron are confirmed in the current diocesan parish directory.
Over time, the community also developed a practice of praying the Liturgy of the Hours together in connection with Mass. In 2017, the Catholic Times of Korea reported that parishioners had been praying Morning Prayer and Daytime Prayer around morning weekday Masses, and Evening Prayer and Night Prayer around evening Masses, for more than two and a half years. This represents one strand of the parish’s history in which the Mass and the Church’s public prayer were closely joined in the community’s everyday life of faith.
