About this place
Songhyeon-dong Parish belongs to the Diocese of Incheon, and its patron is Christ the King. The Catholic Church directory in Korea currently lists it as Songhyeon-dong Parish. It serves Catholics in the Songhyeon-dong area of Incheon’s old downtown as a local center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Its patronal title, Christ the King, gives the parish a clear identity centered on the Church’s liturgical confession of the kingship of Christ.
The parish was established as a separate pastoral center in response to the growth of Catholic populations between Songnim-dong and Hwasu-dong Parishes. After its foundation, the community adapted an existing building for use as a church and gradually expanded educational facilities, forming a stable neighborhood parish that remains independent despite changes in the old downtown. Visitors can see here how the local Church responded to growth in eastern Incheon during the 1970s by establishing new parishes between older ones and by reusing existing urban structures as community bases.
History & origins
In the early 1970s, the Catholic populations of Songnim-dong and Hwasu-dong Parishes grew, increasing the need for a separate parish to serve the Songhyeon-dong area located between them. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records that Songhyeon-dong Parish was established in the autumn of 1976 by transferring territory from the two older parishes. Because the present Catholic Church directory and the encyclopedia give different specific dates for the formal establishment, this account states only the year 1976, which both sources support. The encyclopedia also records that the parish’s first Mass was celebrated on October 1.
The new community did not begin with a purpose-built church. Instead, the parish acquired a former Korean Red Cross hospital building and adapted it for use as a church, with a dedication ceremony held on October 23 of the following year. Converting an existing urban building into a liturgical and community space was a practical pastoral response to the rapid increase of Catholics in the old downtown area.
As the community became established, its facilities were expanded. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea records renovation and enlargement of the church in 1987 and the creation of a parish library in 1990 for education and cultural activities. The history of Songhyeon-dong thus moves from the growth of neighboring parishes, through the adaptation of an existing building as a church, to the gradual strengthening of educational and community functions in a stable downtown parish.
