About this place
Sohwa Teresa Aewol Parish belongs to the western district of the Diocese of Jeju and has Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church, as its patron. It serves Aewol-ri, Gonae-ri, Gwakji-ri, Geumseong-ri, Sangga-ri, Haga-ri, Nabeup-ri, Bongseong-ri, and Eoeum-ri, linking Catholics across several coastal and mid-mountain villages of Aewol-eup within one parish community.
The roots of the parish lie in the Catholic community of the Aewol area, which continued for many years as a mission station belonging to Hallim Parish. The present parish is the result of that mission community’s growth into an independent parish and now serves as the center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The spirituality of the Little Flower, Saint Thérèse, expressed in the parish name, connects the community’s identity with a faith that seeks to love God through small and ordinary acts of daily life.
History & origins
The Catholic community of the Aewol area began in 1959 as Aewol Mission Station under Hallim Parish. During the period when there was no independent parish in Aewol, local Catholics gathered around the mission station and continued their faith under the pastoral care of Hallim Parish. This mission-station period became the foundation of the community that later developed into today’s Aewol Parish.
As the local community grew, work began to establish a more independent church facility. In 2007, the community moved to the present site and constructed a church. After decades as a mission station, it now had a physical base capable of supporting further growth toward parish status.
The new church was blessed in 2010, and on February 10, 2012, Aewol Mission Station was finally elevated to a parish. More than fifty years after the mission station’s establishment, the continuity and growth of the local Catholic community had led to the creation of an independent parish structure.
This history illustrates a characteristic pattern in western Jeju: a village-based mission community sustained for decades under the care of a mother parish gradually matured, built its own church, and developed into an independent parish.
