About this place
Sinpung Catholic Church is a parish of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju serving part of Gimje city together with nearby rural Catholic communities. According to official diocesan information, its patron is St. Peter Jo Hwa-seo, and the parish has Yongji, Shinam, and Baekja as mission stations. Sinpung therefore brings an urban parish community and neighboring rural mission communities together within one pastoral territory.
The church is the central place for Mass, the sacraments, prayer, catechesis, and parish community life. Its role, however, extends beyond the parish building itself, particularly because it is responsible for mission stations with distinctive histories, such as Shinam. Through the relationship between parish and mission stations, Sinpung Parish connects and supports Catholic communities dispersed across the Gimje area.
History & origins
Official records of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju state that Sinpung Parish was established on January 26, 1985. Its creation reflected the growth of Catholic communities in Gimje and the surrounding area, leading to the division of existing parish territory and the formation of a new pastoral unit.
After its establishment, Sinpung Parish came to care not only for the parish community in Gimje city but also for the mission stations of Yongji, Shinam, and Baekja. Because each of these communities has a different local background and history, Sinpung’s history has unfolded not only through the parish church itself but also through its relationship with surrounding rural mission stations.
Diocesan parish-visit records and current parish information show that since 1985 Sinpung has continued a pastoral ministry that embraces both the parish church and its mission communities in the Gimje area.
