About this place
Sinjeju Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Jeju in the western urban district. Its pastoral territory includes Yeondong, parts of Nohyeong-dong, Sinseong Village in Dodu 2-dong, and parts of Ora-dong within the greater Sinjeju area of Jeju City. Both the current diocesan parish guide and the parish’s official website identify Saint Michael the Archangel as its patron. Having grown together with the expansion of the city, the parish is one of the principal local communities where Catholics in the Sinjeju residential and commercial districts gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life.
The present church was built during a period of rapid urbanization and strong growth in the number of parishioners. The parish itself explains the church building as resembling a ship, symbolizing the Church on pilgrimage through the world, while its tower evokes a lighthouse shining in the darkness. These images help visitors understand Sinjeju not simply as a local facility but as a Catholic community seeking to make the Gospel visible in the city and to offer consolation and hope to those who enter it.
History & origins
The formation of a parish in Sinjeju took place alongside the expansion of Jeju City in the late twentieth century. Parish sources explain that the development of the new Sinjeju district around Yeondong under the city plan of 1976 created a growing need for a new Catholic community. In 1980, Sinjeju Mission Station was established under Seomun Parish, and the faithful prepared for parish status while building a chapel that gave the community a stable base.
Sinjeju Mission Station was raised to parish status on November 1, 1981. After the first church was dedicated, rapid urbanization and population growth brought a sharp increase in the number of parishioners, creating the need for a larger church. The present church was completed and dedicated in 1988. Its ship-like form and lighthouse-shaped tower visually express the urban missionary identity that developed during this period.
The parish territory also changed as the city continued to grow. In 1984, Hagwi Mission Station was transferred from Gwangyang Parish. Nohyeong Parish was later separated in 1997, Hagwi Mission Station became a parish in 1998, and Yeondong Parish was separated in 2001. These changes show not simply the expansion of a single parish but the gradual formation of new parish communities in response to shifting population patterns in the Diocese of Jeju.
