About this place

Sinjang Parish belongs to the Hanam–Yangpyeong district of the Second Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and has long served as a central Catholic community in the Hanam area. The official Catholic directory identifies it as a district-center parish. Its patrons are the Apostles Saint Simon and Saint Jude Thaddeus, linking the parish’s identity with the apostolic calling to bear witness to the Gospel and build up the Christian community.

Diocesan material also describes Sinjang as a mother parish for the Hanam area. As the city expanded and new parishes were established, the parish provided an important foundation from which neighboring Catholic communities could take root. Today it continues to serve local Catholics through the celebration of Mass and the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. Its present designation as a district-center parish also shows that Sinjang has a coordinating significance extending beyond the boundaries of a single parish. Its place becomes clearer when viewed within the broader pastoral life of the Hanam–Yangpyeong district.

History & origins

Sinjang Parish was established on January 10, 1967, at a time when the Catholic community in the Hanam area was developing a more independent parish structure. It became a base for sacramental life and catechesis, and diocesan material later described it as a mother parish that had served the Hanam area for many years.

As urbanization and population growth transformed Hanam, the Catholic community also expanded in size and reach. Sinjang maintained its own parish life while providing a foundation from which newer local communities could grow. When the Diocese of Suwon highlighted the parish’s evangelizing activity in the late 2010s, it pointed to the parish’s decades-long ties with local residents as an important strength, showing the continuity of this history.

The parish’s story is therefore not simply a chronology of church buildings. It is closely connected with the growth and division of Catholic communities across Hanam. The relationships and communal experience formed over decades have continued into later generations of parish life and evangelization, making Sinjang an important mother parish in the Catholic history of the area. Diocesan reporting that identified the parish’s long local roots as a strength for evangelization shows that this history is more than a matter of age or size. Relationships among Catholic families and their neighbors, sustained across generations, became a form of trust within the local community and provided a foundation for welcoming new believers. This continuity did not disappear when new parishes were created; instead, Sinjang’s identity was reshaped as that of a central community with deep local roots.
